Your 2008-2009 Officers

Visit our " Officers and Representatives"  link below for a list of contacts for ACOFP if you need to speak to any of us personally.  We are here to help.

Below is a list of events ACOFP-TCOM has helped sponsor or participated in over the last few months:

     TSFMPP Introduction

At our officer election meeting, we also heard Linda Stucker, UNTHSC TSFMPP coordinator and Eric Johnson, OMS II on the Texas State Family Medical Preceptorship Program.  If you are interested, here are the presentations that were shown during the meeting.  Please click on this link to view the presentations and forms:  Texas State Family Medicine Preceptorship Program

     Joint Meeting with GHI

We had a joint meeting with Global Health Initiative (GHI) in order to host a talk by Dr. John Gibson, MD.  Dr. Gibson is the Director of the International Fellowship for the JPS Family Medicine Residency Program.  I think he inspired a lot of students with his stories and pictures of some of his work in Thailand and his colleague's work in Israel-including the West Bank.

     Homeless Shelter Volunteering

Hygiene products were distributed and BP and blood glucose levels were checked at the downtown homeless shelter in December.  Many were educated on disease prevention regarding diabetes, high cholesterol, osteoperosis, HIV/AIDS.  It was a great success and we will be doing this again next semester.  Check out the pics here:  Homeless Shelter Volunteering

     SW Family Medicine Residency

Jeb Frost, D.O. (Class of 2008) came to talk to current TCOM students about the UAMS Area Health Education Center- Southwest Family Medicine Residency Program. Unfortunately, Dr. Russell Mayo, M.D., Program Director for the program was unable to join us for the talk, but we hope he gets well soon! For more information on the residency program, please visit: http://ahecsw-familymedicine.org/overview.htm.

      OSCE Review

Eric Johnson presented an OSCE review for first year students in preparation for their first graded head to toe physical for Clinical Medicine.  The session was taped and Eric even made a presentation for the event.  Both were made available to those who could not make it out.  Those who could make it said it was very helpful.  Thanks Eric!

      Dr. Linda Siy, M.D.

Dr. Siy spoke at our October meeting about our part in politics and our future practicing medicine.  She is chair of several committees for the Texas Academy of Family Physicians and motivated us to be involved in the political process...because we already are involved even if we do nothing!

DO Dash and Community Health Fair

On October 25th, 2008 ACOFP-TCOM members participated in DO Dash, an annual charity 5K organized by the class of 2011 DO Dash Committee.  This year's DO Dash benefited lung cancer screening and awareness thanks in part to contributions by many organizations including ACOFP-TCOM.  We took part by having a booth for Health Education and BMI.  There was a great turn out and figures are still being tallied on funds raised.  A big thanks to all for making this a successful event.

     Dr. Alex Guevara, D.O.

On September 18th, Dr. Alex Guevara gave us an inspiring speech about life and practice as a Family Practice physician.  It was a good time and we all learned a lot about how life in family practice can be rewarding in all ways including financial.

     Catholic Diocese Sports Physicals

On August 23, both 2nd and 1st years gave physicals to students from the Catholic Diocese of Tarrant Count.  It was a great opportunity to hone our physical taking skills and we raised enough money to install eye wash stations for the students.

     Eryn Loney

In August, Eryn Loney gave us all an informative talk about our future residency opportunities and how to use the CiM website.
